Yes, Jesus really is God: Rebutting Islam's False View of Jesus' Deity

Paul Derengowski, ThM

Islam is infamous for its rejection of fundamental Christian beliefs, only to turn around and criticize, misrepresent, and distort those beliefs to others in an effort to make Islamic beliefs look that much more palatable.  A key doctrine which Muslims vehemently deny is the deity of Jesus.  Jesus was not God, in other words.  It is a denial that is nothing new, since one of the first arguments to take place in the Christian church was over the divine nature of Jesus.  The heretic Arius denied Jesus' deity, thought he was a created being, and hence believed he was nothing more than a man; a demi-god at best.  Such a view is repeated in Islam almost word for word.

The following article, therefore, will not only present Islam's argument for why it believes that Jesus was not God, but will also demonstrate the multiple flaws in the argument.  To ensure balance, fairness, and objectivity the published pamphlet Is Jesus Really God? will be used as an outline and quoted verbatim.  It is a pamphlet that is widely recognized by Muslims and distributed at mosques, meetings, and events to inform inquirers about the basic beliefs of Islam.  The Islamic Education Foundation in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia is the publisher.

The format of the article will have the Islam article block-quoted in red, which will then be followed by the rebuttal.  If Jesus isn't God, as Islam claims, then the Bible and Christianity cannot be true.  Conversely, if Jesus is God, then Islam, Muhammad, and the Qur'an also cannot be true, and is simply another in a long list of counterfeit religions offering a counterfeit gospel that only the most hardened and naïve will continue to follow after the evidence has been presented.  Let us now take a look at that evidence.

Introduction

Without a doubt, you have often heard the claim that Jesus is God, the second person in the "Holy Trinity."  However, the very Bible which is used as a basis for knowledge about Jesus and as the basis for doctrine within Christianity clearly belies this claim.  We urge you to consult your own Bible and verify that the following conclusions are not drawn out of context:

Please note that the opening challenge not only includes a denial of Jesus' deity, but an open rejection of the Trinity as well. This is common among cults and aberrant religions, and should serve as a red flag to the wary.  Anytime a person or group rejects something as basic as the biblical teaching of the Trinity or the reality of Jesus' deity, then one may rest assure that that person is either an anti-Christian, a Christian counterfeiter, or is woefully deficient in biblical knowledge and understanding.  Nevertheless, we accept the challenge to consult our Bible and verify that the Muslims conclusions have been taken out of context.
